Frequently Asked Questions

  • My goal is to make what can be an overwhelming process into a fun experience! If you have never had a color consultation before, you are not alone.

I will bring 2-5 boxes of swatches with me, you are not required to have any paint colors in advance. We will take a quick tour of the areas you are working on, and you can tell me about any ideas you may want to see. If you will be painting outside, our meeting will take place outside (unless alternative accommodations are requested).

If you are hoping to coordinate with a new tile/floor/etc., please have samples of those. I will assess any new finishes and existing ones to make my recommendations, but will work together to create the palette. You will receive follow up documentation and swatches after the consultation.

  • Payment is not required to book, but it is due at the end of the site visit.

I accept: cash, checks, Zelle, and Venmo. Credit card payment links can be provided upon request and may incur an additional processing fee.

  • Usually, the sooner the better! Allowing yourself more time to sample the colors and view them during different times of the day will help you to feel more comfortable before committing to the color(s). After the consultation, I will mail you a packet of extra swatches, lead time on swatch packets is 2-4 days. Applying paint samples is also an important part of the selection process.

Lead time on exterior renderings is typically 24-48 hours, and you may want to consider leaving an additional couple of days before your project begins to do your sampling.

Especially the summertime, planning ahead is your friend! It is my busiest season and appointments get booked out farther in advance. Evening appointments tend to fill up more quickly.

  • Please have any swatches you have selected available for the appointment, or a few you are considering and we can work through them together.

Examples could be: countertops, cabinets, flooring, tile, wallpaper, fabrics. For outside, this may be a new garage door color, or window/siding/gutter brand that I do not already have samples of. Feel free to contact me so I can help you determine which items may be needed from you.

Although I can work from blueprints, I prefer to be able to visit the site once the walls are up, and ideally when lighting is installed.

  • I will mail you a packet of paper swatches after the appointment, but for the quickest and most accurate representation of the color, I recommend applying actual paint samples.

It is essential to buy the paint sample from the brand of color you have chosen. Paint samples are only available in a Satin finish, if you have selected another sheen, the color will present differently and you may want to get a quart in the same sheen you would like the final result to be.

If time allows, it is a good plan to review the paper swatches and wait to get a paint quart of only your favorite one, as they can add up if you buy several (and that’s what I want to avoid!)

If you apply the paint sample directly to the surface, it will likely need to be scuff sanded before the full coat of paint is applied or you may notice an outline where the sample was. Many clients opt to paint a posterboard/foam board, cardboard, or spare piece of wood, that way it can be relocated.

Lastly, it is absolutely critical for the color to be reviewed directly next to what the color will connect to. For example, if you sample an off white color on a dark wall, the color will not look accurate unless you tape a piece of your trim color next to it or apply next to the trim.

  • I am happy to help coordinate your colors with any other finishes you may be updating during your project. I do not source materials or decor but I can help you look at inspiration and give direction. For example, if you are getting new flooring, have 3-5 samples of floors you like and we can decide together.

For interior I can coordinate with and give recommendations on: window treatments, flooring, countertops, tile, cabinetry, etc.

For exterior, I do have some swatches, but if you have your own samples of the following we can look them over during the appointment: roof shingles, composite decking, vinyl siding, cement board siding, windows, columns, shutters, or gutters. I can also design front entry door configurations and include those in your renderings.
